N80 supports Location API (JSP - 179)

I was looking for a phone that supports Location API and about a year back I was fixed on N91, today I happed to see N91 along with N80 and trust me N91 is huge and bulky phone a better option is N80 and the best part is that also supports Location API

Phone upgrade hell

Looking to upgrade to N91 and trust me it is a real hell calling uping the service provider and haggling with them about the correct price and the monthly deal and duration etc.

And before calling them up I have to spend time doing all the price research into the phone deals etc,
Here is what Vodafone is charging me after being a customer for 2 years and not asking for an upgrade (yes I didnt ask for one - totaly stupid)
Phone Charge: 160£

Monthly Rental : 36£
Talk Minutes: 200 X network with stop the clock (Stop the Clock - Any calls made on the evening and weekend are capped at 3mins even if you make a single call that is > 3 min)
Texts : 100

I would also get 2 months free line rental which make the phone cost around 88£

After having a talk with them I decided not to go in for it, since I think when I did some research over the weekend I got a few other sites where I could get it much cheaper.
This site has a good comparison for N91 and the different deals avaliable.

http://audiovisual.kelkoo.co.uk/ctl/do/sort?pid=16415672&catId=100010713&tsSearchId=1150102370330&searchId=101020179_1150102370330_847407723&JServSessionIduk=xfv5cucc11.L37J2uk&field=linerental&sortcolumnid=line_rental

I think I am go in for Dial a phone
O2 -
Minutes: 200 X network anytime
Text: 100
Monthly Charge:30£
Phone Charge: 19£
And 6 months free 1/2 price line rental.
http://www.dialaphone.co.uk/kelkoo/offer/18O2XN250/

If i do switch to o2 I guess I have to get the pac code from Vodaphone and cancle my contract and move my phone number over and do all the other mess.

Required Swing JTable Extensions

I was looking for certain JTable extension.
1. Sorting tables (multi level)
2. Multi level sort indicators.
3. Exporting tables to multiple formats XML, Excel,HTML (the formatting used when exporting to HTML must be configurable)etc.
4. Ability to add custom cell rendering and cell editors.
5. Changing the table column and row ordering.
6. Cell, Row and Column highlighting (bg color, fg color)
7. Adding triggers to columns (e.g. if the value is > 100 ) then show in red. Also ability to add this to multiple columns and also multiple condition using AND , OR operators.
8. Freezing Columns and Rows, once they are frozen scrolling dosent hide them
9. Adding custom formatting of columns (numberical, text etc)
10. Editable table headers, including specifying the style etc
11. Nested tables.
12. Searching table data - similar to the one provided by iTunes when searching for a song (i.e. as you star typing the list of hits narrow down)
13. Ability change the data displayed in a column if the column contains certain value e.g. If the value = H then display Hot and if C then display Cold. The user should be able to configure this.
14. Ability to specify the font and the allignment for each column.

Some of these features are provided by JIDE Softwar, Read more here: JIDE Software

I wanted to import all the contacts from Mac-Address book into outlook, unfortunately Outlook can only import single vCard (version 2.1) and Address Book (on Mac) exports a bulk of address as a single vCard (version 3). Using iSync for Synchornizing Mac and Nokia 6600

I used iSync for synchornizing the contacts and calendar between my phone and the Mac, and it worked without any possible problem at all. It was very easy as compared to the pain and torture that I have to go through when syncing up on window with the different blue tooth device drivers - It can really be a pain. Moreover the nokia pc suite for windows is a horrible tool (totaly useless) - I guess Oxygen Phone manager for windows is much better but you have to pay for it, while the stuff that comes with Mac is totaly free.

Beautiful World - Colin Hay

Nice song by Colin Hay, I think it is about being content with life.

My my my, It’s a beautiful world
I like swimming in the sea
I like to go out beyond the white breakers
Where a man can still be free,
Or a woman if you are one
I like swimming in the sea

My my my, It’s a beautiful world
I like drinking Irish Tea
With a little bit of lap sang souchong
I like making my own Tea

My my my, It’s a beautiful world
I like driving in my car
Roll the top down,
Sometimes I travel quite far
Drive to the ocean
Stare up at the stars

All around is anger, automatic guns
Death in large numbers, no respect for woman, or our little ones
I tried talking to Jesus, but he just put me on hold
Said he’d been swamped by calls this week
And He could not shake his cold

And still this emptiness persists
Perhaps this is as good as it gets
When you’ve given up the drink and those nasty cigarettes
Now I leave the party early at least with no regrets
I watch the sun as it comes up I watch it as it sets
Yeah this is as good as it gets

My my my, It’s a beautiful world
I like sleeping with Marie
She is one sexy girl full of mystery
She says she doesn’t love me, but she likes my company
For now that’s good enough for me

Usefull Mac utilities

Some usefull Mac utilities (thanks to Tom)

For remote desktop, there is a commercial product called Timbuktu that might be better. I haven't used it but it is popular among mac users.

For utilities, etc, the ones I use most regularly are:

Fink - loads of open source programs, with the debian apt-get installer means its very easy to add most command line (and other) utilities you've used on linux and other unixes.
InquisitorX - I actually paid for this, it's only 5 dollars. Gives you a decent google suggest for the search box on Safari.
Menumeters - gives CPU/net/etc graphs for the menu bar. Also gives quick access to Activity Monitor.
AdiumX - multi-network chat client. Best one I found and free too.
BluePhoneElite - neat on screen alerts when you get a phone call or SMS (including who is calling). Also allows sending SMS from desktop.
CaminoBrowser - OSX-ised version of firefox. Quicker than firefox and looks neater but doesn't support plugins.
Cyberduck - simple, neat, free FTP client
Flip4Mac - free windows media codecs for OSX. Much better than windows media player - actually works well embedded in browser, etc.
Kismac - Wireless network scanner. Best one I think - better than iStumbler or MacStumbler
Gvim - Mac port is good
VLC - Mac port also very good.
Carbon Copy Cloner - handy for backing up whole disk to another drive.
www.serverlogistics.com - do decent packaged versions of Tomcat, MySQL to install. Adds System Preferences widgets for starting/stopping.
Native versions of IntelliJ and Sybase are decent.
Best Torrent client is Azureus of course ;-)

Hopefully that's enough to get you started !

My DVD/CD drive doest recongnize CDs in Windows

I rebooted the machine and I still have the same problem
First I wanted to find out if the problem was software or harware. On way to test that is to boot into Linux and test if I still access the drive, the other option was a simple, I used one of Nero's Tools and it could test the drive speed, get the name of the disk and other stuff. This confirmed that the problem is software and not hardware ( just to be really sure that the problem is software I could boot into linux and test it out). Next was to find out if anyone had the same problem so I started googling.
I got this site a guy on this forum talks about the drivers that are loaded into windows and a tool that can display the device drivers load order for different drives. So I downloaded and executed the program 'Filter Driver Load Order'. My NEC DVD drive had the following information
1. Upper Class Filter - GEARAspiWDM - Gear Software
2. Upper Class Filter - redbook - Microsoft
3. Device - the actual device
4. Lower Class Filter - Pfc
5. Lower Class Filter - PcHelp20
6. Lower Device Filter - imapi

The only thing standing out was GEARAspiWDM, since this wasnt supplied by Microsft.
This is the first time I am hearing about a software from Gear, so who installed it?
On Googling for sutff realted to GearAspiWDM I found this article , It seems that there are certain 3rdParty applications that install the GEAR drivers, like iTunes - I think I just updated to the latest version of iTunes a while back, I just need to remember if the last time I used the drive was before of after that time(I still dont remember). I downloaded and installed the latest version of iTunes on the 26thJan, I also looked into the iTunes installer and noticed that it comes with Drivers.cab and bingo this file contained the GEAR drivers.

What is Upper Class Filters etc?
I could find more information about this in the book
'Microsoft® Windows® Internals, Fourth Edition: Microsoft Windows Server™ 2003, Windows XP, and Windows 2000' - By Mark E. Russinovich, David A. Solomon
I think I blogged about this a while back.

Is there a way for uninstalling it ?
Using this article I can possible manually uninstall it

What other options do I have ?
1. Download and install the latest version of the driver from GEAR
2. Find out if there is a way for
3. Uninstall iTunes and see if it solves the problem.

We will see how it goes.

Finally I manually uninslled Gear Drivers, and I restarted iTunes and iTunes came up with a message stating that iTunes was not installed propertly and it cannot import music from CDs, which is fine since I dont use iTunes for that at all.

Google Your Desktop(Moving your Index files)

The application (Google Desktop) fails to install if you have less than 1GB free and will only install on your system partition. So if you have multiple partitions, don't like installing apps to your system drive or have less than 1GB free on it then you cant do anything much.

This can easily remedied with a registry change...If you want to change the location of the cache, you just need to change a registry key:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Desktop\data_dirIt defaults to C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Google Desktop SearchI just exited the search with the tray icon, changed it to a folder on my D drive and moved the existing files over to the new location and then restarted it and it is now updating at the new location just dandy

Eclipse Distilled

This book provides quite a good introduction to eclipse, I bet there is a lot of information about eclipse on the net and most people will not require a book, but I generally find that when looking into a new topic the amount of information is too much, quite often when you are looking at a new topic you want a high level view of the entire subject before you can choose the particular sub topic to dive into. This book provides that kinda high level view (well at least the 1st chapter does).

After reading the first chapter I am very interested in Eclipse Rich Client Platform(RCP) applications.

About a month back I picked up a book on SWT (Professional Java Native Interfaces with SWT/JFace), just for casual reading just out of interest. I liked the book very much and its introduction to SWT. At that time I was thinking that the next time I have to write a desktop application I should SWT instead of Swing. But today after understanding the Eclipse RCP framework and the generic features that is provider, I feel that it provides much more application support rather than just using SWT. I feel that if you are using Eclipse RCP you can then concentrate on the actual business logic rather than spending time re-creating a UI, moreover the plugability provided by RCP is really great.

Low space on C:

The amount of space on C: was really low, so I decided that I would install windows on a diff partition (this time give it 10Gb) I started off with that and then got board since it takes a really long time, moreover I didnt have the installer for some of the software, like Far Cry and Stary Night. So I decide that I would go back to my previous install and try and move Docuements and Settings to a different partiftion after searching for a some time I found this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314843/ I tried to move 'Documents and Settings' but I wasnt successfully so I finally mamanged to move my profile to a different drive.
I now have 500mb on C:, well much better than 97mb.

Spent the entire day on this...a realy waste.

I still have to move to the new windows since I am quite sure I am going to hit the lower limit soon.

Social Networking at JavaOne

Nokia Sensor post by Michael Yuan

Spring MVC vs Struts

Gerard Davison's Weblog: First looks, Spring MVC vs Struts

In most places, the Spring framework doesn't reinvent working technologies. In the area of presentation logic, though, Spring introduces a simple model-view-controller framework called MVC Web that has many competing architectures, like Struts and Java Server Faces (JSF). Take solace, though. You don't have to use MVC Web to use Spring. But if you decide to do so, you will find a few advantages:

-MVC Web is based on interfaces rather than inheritance. As we discussed in Chapter 3, interfaces often give better flexibility and looser coupling than inheritance-based designs.

-MVC Web does not dictate your choice of view. Other frameworks tend to provide better support for favored view technologies, such as Velocity (proprietary) and Struts (JSP). For example, Struts exposes the model via request attributes. As a result, you need to build a bridge servlet to use a technology such as Velocity that doesn't understand the Servlet API. Spring exposes the model through a generic map, so it can work with any view technology.

-MVC Web provides consistent configuration across all aspects of a Spring application. It uses the same inversion-of-control paradigm that the other frameworks use.

-MVC Web makes testing easier. Since you don't have to extend another class (like Action or ActionForm in Struts), you can easily mock the request and response.

Error 1714 - while installing iTunes

I was getting 'Error 1714' while installing iTunes I guess it has something to do with the fact that I manually deleted the folder c:\windows\Downloaded Installations\

Since this folder was taking up a lot of HD space on the C drive
Now since I didnt that I couldnt install iTunes updated version since the iTunes installer was loooking for an older version of iTunes to uninstall it and it couldnt find the older installer at c:\windows\Downloaded Installations\

So I downloaded Windows Installer CleanUp Utility that did some clean up.

Stopped by the cops again at Tower Hill Tube Station

I think I am the chosen one since I was stopped again by a cop today but this time it was the Tube station and not the DLR station.
This cop started asking me stuff and then I told him that I had allready been searched, he had a stupid look on his face and I told me that I was searched on friday and he asked me if I had the ticket with me so I showed it to him. He then said that he was sorry and he said that I do have a big bag with me ( big ??? it is just a normal sized bag, and nothing much in it ), told him that if he still wanted to have a look inside he definately can. He said that he said that it was ok and he let me go.

Rapid reboots on Dell GX270

For the last couple of days I was having a problem with my PC at work. It just kept rebotting, and I also noticed that it made a wierd sound while starting up. The rebotting was quite random and not related to any problem with a software.
That guy at the help desk was really helpfull and he told me that my profile was really huge, we reduced it by deleting the cache folder in .IntelliJ that seemed to have solved the problem for yesterday, but then today morning I couldnt log into the system at all.

Finally the hardware guy came over and he opened the machine and he told me that a capacitor was fried, I had a look at it and it looked like some puss ozzing out.
He told me that he is taking my PC and going to replace the motherboard and will get it back in about an hrs time, it is good that the problem was related to just my motherboard and not any software, since I didnt want to go through the entire process of re configuring my machine and setting it up to work the way I wanted it to work. Moreover I also dont loose the work that I had done yesterday evening.

I also googled the problem and it came up with this article. I have to say I am luck I dont have this problem with my PC at home since, coz if I did I would have no idea about the actual problem and no way I could get it replaced without paying a huge sum.

The Fabric of the Cosmos

I got this book for my US trip, it is really very good. It is written by Brian Greene, the same author who wrote 'The Elegant Universe'.

Had a really very nice trip to US and did a lot of things, I dont feel like writing much now. I guess I should be uploading all the photos to the internet soon.
